A lot of people are at a loss as to what Microsoft Visio actually does. Well, at the most basic level, Microsoft Visio is an illustration program which allows anyone to create professional 2 dimensional drawings and illustrations. Although the program can be used as a general purpose drawing package, one of its great strengths is that it contains a huge library of themed drawing elements which accelerate the process of creating drawings relating to a certain profession or arena. This distinguishes it from programs like Adobe Illustrator or CorelDRAW! which offer the user no particular help when it comes to creating the final illustration and assumes that the user has some artistic or design ability.
Visio allows any computer user to create impressive drawings by using and re-using its huge collections of Shapes. Shapes are pre-created vector drawings, built into the program and arranged by theme. Whether you need to create drawings relating to computing or interior design, chances are that Visio has a series of shapes which you can use to jumpstart your illustration. To build a Visio drawing, you simply drag shapes out of their floating palettes (known as stencils) onto your page. You position, resize and customize the shapes to suit your own ends and, before you know it, you have a professional-looking drawing to show to your colleagues or clients.
There are two editions of Visio: Standard and Professional. Visio Standard is aimed at the business user, anyone from a financial expert to a space planner. This is the version of Visio aimed at users who are not looking at producing specialist drawings. Many of the shapes available in Visio Standard are fairly general purpose and will be used by people in lots of different types of business. Examples of such shapes are organisation charts and flow diagrams. Just about everyone could find a use for these elements in some of their drawings and diagrams.
Visio Professional is aimed at users in specific professions who need to produce illustrations relating to their industry. Users who would benefit from choosing this edition of Microsoft Visio include IT managers, electrical engineers, facilities managers, web developers, software houses, architects and network managers. This version contains a huge library of shapes relating to all these professions.
The bottom line is this; if you are looking to design logo and create artistic illustrations, you probably need to look at a piece of software like Adobe Illustrator. However, if you plan to create diagrams on a given theme relating to your business or profession, then look no further than Microsoft Visio.
