There are three main commands available in scripting for performing Find/Change operations: findText(), findGrep() and findGlyph(). A good deal can be accomplished using the straightforward findText() command. However, if you need to make fairly complex changes, and if you have the time and patience to find the right regular expression, you can use the findGrep() command which is designed for performing searches for regular expressions.

Before performing a Find/Change operation, you need to set up the preferences that will be used. Adobe Acrobat offers four main menu commands for manipulating pages within a PDF document: Insert, Extract, Replace and Delete. These commands are found both in the Document menu and in the Pages panel menu. The Document menu also contains one extra page manipulation command: Split Document.

The Insert command has two options: From File and From Clipboard. If you choose From File, you are presented with a browse dialog where you can navigate to the appropriate file and double-click its name. The Insert Pages dialog then appears, allowing you to specify where the incoming file will be inserted: either before or after a given page. If you choose the Clipboard option, the contents of the clipboard will be converted into a one page PDF document and inserted at the specified position.

The Extract command can be used to copy or move a single page (or a range of pages) into a separate new file. When the command is used, you can specify the page range to be extracted and whether or not the extracted pages should be deleted from the original document. Thus, the Extract command can be used to split an original document into several new and smaller documents. However, if the document has bookmarks, the Split document is more useful, since it will perform the operation in one step.

The Split Document dialog allows you to split a document mechanically (x number of pages in each file, for example). However, more usefully, it also offers an option called Top Level Bookmarks. This causes Acrobat to use each bookmark as the signal of where each of the new documents should start and end. You also have the option of placing the newly created PDF documents into a separate folder and using the bookmark names as the names of the new documents.

The Replace command allows you to choose an incoming PDF file and then specify which page or pages it should replace. Thus, it is equivalent to inserting a document and then deleting the pages which it is designed to replace.

Finally, the Delete command simply allows you to choose a range of pages which will be permanently deleted from the document. This command cannot be undone; so it is probably a good idea to ensure that a backup version of the document exists before using it.

There are two ways of adding images to a PowerPoint slide: as an independent object or as a background. The advantage of having the image independent is that you can manipulate it more easily: you can position it anywhere on the slide, resize it or crop it. You can also move it in front or behind other objects at will. Setting an image as the background to a slide always places it behind all other objects and since it can’t be highlighted like other objects, it effectively gets locked in that position and can’t get in the way.

Slide masters often contain background images and, naturally, anything placed on the slide master will also be visible on all slides based on that master. However, background images can also be used on individual slides. Simply activate the slide and then click on the Design Tab of the PowerPoint ribbon. Next, click on the Launch button in the bottom right of the Background group to display the Format Background dialog.

Within the Format Background dialog there are two categories: Fill and Picture. In the Fill section, you need to click on the radio button labelled Picture or texture Fill. Next, you need to click on the File button to locate the image you want to use as a background. Then, optionally, you can switch to the Picture section and apply effects to the image such as changing the contrast or brightness or recolouring the image as a kind of duotone. If you choose some options and don’t like the result, simply click on the button marked Reset Picture.

It’s quite a luxury to have these options even when the image is inserted as a background. In previous versions of PowerPoint, the image editing options were only available with independent images. By the way, to access the options for editing images which are created by clicking on the Picture button on the Insert Tab of the Ribbon, simply highlight the image and activate the Format Tab of the Ribbon. (This is a context tab and will only appear when an image is highlighted.)

It’s not commonly knows, but you can also use as an image as the background fill to any PowerPoint text box or shape. Thus, for example, you might want to use an image as the backdrop to your bullet points. To set this up, all you need to do is to is to right-click on the object and choose Format Shape from the context menu. On the left of the dialog box which appears, highlight the Fill category; choose Picture or Texture Fill as the type; click on the File button and locate the image you wish to use as a fill. And it doesn’t end there: with a bit of tweaking can even use this same trick on charts and graphs.

This multi-browser testing is particular important for testing that CSS and JavaScript is functioning correctly. What works well in one browser does not always work in another.

At the web page level, you should also check both the text and the markup of each page. A simple omission made by many web developers is to check spelling. Naturally, this can be done in a word-processor such as Microsoft Word, prior to bringing the text into Dreamweaver. However, even in this scenario, it is quite typical to make further changes to your text within Dreamweaver. It is always a good idea, therefore, to run the spell-checker on every page. In Design mode, simply choose Check Spelling from The Command menu.

Another type of error which you should try to eliminate is broken links. These are, if nothing else, a potential cause of annoyance to your website visitor. Dreamweaver’s Link Checker will look for any links to pages that do not exist as well as locating orphaned pages; i.e., pages that do not have any links pointing to them and which will therefore not be found by your website visitors.
